Raymond, when you mentioned in post #6 to specify the card indexes, did you 
mean just write:
    snd-intel8x0 index=0
    snd-hda-intel index=1 
in alsa-base.conf ?

Currently, these exist in my alsa-base.conf:

    options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto

I don't understand the significance of the `m` in snd-intel... anyway.

Should I modify those lines to be:

    options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
    options snd-intel8x0 index=0
    options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto

?
