I have the very same issue on the 20121017.5 live image, downloaded from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20121017.5 (MD5 sum was verified
after download).

My system is a PowerMac G5 Quad. So it doesn't appear to be specific to the
PowerBook G4's hardware.
After booting the console is slowly filled with the following messages:
---
unable to open '/dev/sdb'
stdin: not a typewriter
stdin: not a typewriter
unable to open '/dev/sdb'
stdin: not a typewriter
stdin: not a typewriter
....
---
There is no further progress... it just loops over and over again.
It appears that there is disk activity going on before each message is printed
to the console.

I noticed that the image that I downloaded is not available anymore on
cdimage.ubuntu.com. Now there's no powerpc image at all... Where can I
find an archive of images for the ports, so I can for example try out
the previous release (precise)?
