Continuing my last comment, I tried the kernel parameters with the lucid live cd (linux 2.6.32).
Neither of them caused the screen brightness controls to function. acpi_osi="Linux" gave me the same results as without. acpi_backlight=vendor caused there to be only an "nv_backlight" directory in "/sys/class/backlight/".
