This now happens to me also, with Ubuntu 7.04 (is that Feisty?). It started after I accepted an automatic update for VMware (I installed VMware off a direct download from VMware, not from the package manager; the update was for device drivers of some description) and has been consistently present since then. As other reports indicate this can be caused by a race condition, I'll try waiting longer to log in and see if that changes things.
