I have reason to believe this is a regression from Bug #669641

Upgraded Ubuntu from 12.04 to 12.10
Followed procedure outlined in 
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/669641/comments/24 , 
replacing precise with quantal where appropriate.

$ uname -r
3.5.0-18-generic

$ zgrep -B2 669641 /usr/share/doc/linux-image-$(uname
-r)/changelog.Debian.gz

  * PACKAGING: add .gnu_debuglink sections to .ko files
    - LP: #669641

$ dpkg -l "linux-image-$(uname -r)*"|cat
