Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, I started experience this happening.
It sometimes happens that Nautilus hangs. It's eating 100% of my CPU,
the window is darkened, I can't do anything on the desktop etc.

top output:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
9721 kermit 20 0 1390m 129m 19m R 98,4 1,6 5:33.28
nautilus

So far I can't tie this to anything specific. My other programs work
normally with files during that time. Pkilling nautilus doesn't really
help. After some time it can get ok once again, while sometimes I have
to reboot.
