I noticed this issue affects my system mentioned above under WinXP too. Even more with WinXP.
So I think this whole "bug" is hardware -related. This bug is not to blame Linux. I used WinXP to show animated movies to my kids as video quality is better with WinXP. Videos played without a glitch, but after that my wife surfed the internet using Firefox and XP, and black 1 second blinks appeared at approximately 5 minutes intervals. So, hardware related.
