Try pressing the escape key when booting and see if any messages that look relevant appear. Ideally, you should boot by removing "quiet" and "splash" from the kernel command-line.
It would be useful to see your /etc/fstab file if you can attach it too. What happens if you boot the machine normally, login, and then plug your phone in?
