I tried again with 12.04.1 and the symptoms persist. The segfault in
syslog from `sudo synaptic` is:

  synaptic[26096]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f2a088f2818 sp 00007fff87b834c0
error 4 in libstdc++.so.6.0.16[7f2a08854000+e2000]

interestingly, `gksu synaptic` exits without produces anything in
syslog. Unfortunately the automatic bug reporter also seems to have a
problem, and I'm not sure how to appropriately collect system info
otherwise.

I did a 'dist-upgrade' from 11.10 to 12.04 some time ago.
