I got somewhat further.

this .background-cache.png is used from /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme .
This uses /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png

which does not exist on all of my machines, but on that particular one,
and contains the debian background.

This file points to /etc/alternatives/desktop-grub, which points to
/usr/share/images/desktop-base/spacefun-grub.png, which is part of the
package desktop-base.  This package does not exist on my other machines.
No idea why this was installed on my new notebook, but the new notebook
was the only one where I used 12.04.01 to install ubuntu.
