Public bug reported: I chose to use the NVidia driver (nvidia-current) in the Additional Drivers tab of the software sources (which I'm guessing is still provided by jockey - if not, the package is wrong for this bug).
This installed the driver, I rebooted and got the lightdm login screen. After logging in I saw an error dialog about trying different video modes and being unsuccessful, over the top of the background image. There was nothing else displayed on the screen, and only one of my 2 monitors had any output, the other being in powersave. After clicking the Close button on the error dialog, nothing except the background image was displayed. Eventually I discovered that right- clicking brought up a menu that would allow me to open a terminal among other options (nautilus right-click menu?). I found out that the nvidia- current driver was not being used. After lots of investigation and swapping between nouveau and nvidia- current drivers, I discovered that there was a /etc/modprobe.d /blacklist-local.conf which contained the single line "blacklist nvidia_current". I would expect that upon choosing to use the proprietary driver, a check would be made for a blacklist of the module that is being chosen (also a check for the nouveau blacklist if restoring that driver), and a warning message displayed or a prompt to remove the blacklist.
