I am so glad I am not the only one, I have an Acer Aspire 8930 laptop
with an Nvidia 9600M GT graphics card, the resolution is permentally set
to 1920x1080p, which looks great, but its no good for my aging eyes. I
used to have a selection of resolutions now on the one, which is the
highest level resolution my laptop will allow.

:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1980 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 408mm
x 230mm
   1920x1080 60.0*+
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
