This indicates an installer crash. The desktop session is a "recovery" path
from the installer crash. Is it at all possible for you to submit:
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/installer/dm
/var/loginstaller/debug
Or once in the desktop session to attempt to run $ ubuntu-bug ubiquity
