I think I have the issue resolved. I tried re-installing it, but still no luck. After some poking around I tweaked some of the SASL config files and then it installed ok. I haven't seen the errors I was getting since & I was getting them almost every time I installed or updated anything. This doesn't make much sense, because /usr/lib/sasl2/berkeley_db.txt is owned by libsasl2-2, which is a dependency of sasl2-bin. So the fact that this file is missing is likely due to that file having been manually removed.
