I wouldn't mind trying nouveau, if it wasn't that trying to change nvidia drivers results in boot fails to tty because headers modules are wrong and I end up having to use jockey-text.
Also, 304 experimental is what I ended up having by installing nvidia- current, I certainly didn't want to make my life harder myself :) Not to say, on Ubuntu 12.04 + elementary daily ppa, same machine same drivers, I didn't have the issue above. So I think it's not Gala "per se", but rather the removing of something from ubuntu perharps?
