Ah, well I mistook the source of my __git_ps1, my bad. My /etc/bash.bashrc does contain the bash_completion hook, and bash_completion is working. However unless I explicitly source /etc/bash_completion.d/git-prompt in my bashrc, I get the error about __git_ps1 not being found.
