@Martin: Apologies, I fat fingered it, and found no way to correct my
mistake, great first contribution to Ubuntu eh?

@Covi: More people with this provlem are running Intel CPU with on-board
GPU and have the same issue, nvidia should be let off the hook in this
instance.

@all: Commenting on this bug for a machine which is still in someway
responsive, is just filling it with unrelated information. This is a
HARD LOCK problem, resulting in a machine which is dead in the water,
the lights are on, but nobody is home.

In order to provide some constructive input:
I have been experiencing this exact bug (HARD LOCK, loss of networking,
absolutely no input, etc... ) after reinstalling afresh from a stable 11.10
Oneiric on 2.6 kernel, to 12.04 Precise with a 3.2 kernel.

In an attempt to remedy the problem, I have tried installing the linux-
image-generic-lts-quantal package to pull in a 3.5 kernel, NO FIX
(possibly even more frequent).

Having read many many reports and forum posts through several different
distributions on various different hardware platforms, it seems it is
not entirely limited to those which are Ubuntu derived. There seems to
be a relatively common theme of Intel CPU's with onboard GPU,
specificially the i3 and i5 processors which make use of the i915
driver. Which I happen to have Oops logs in syslog for once in a while
(most likely another relatively unrelated bug in the i915 driver). So
again in a vain attempt to resolve the issue, I made use of XORG-EDGERS
PPA to obtain the latest daily builds of this driver and other xorg
components, NO FIX.

Another common theme among these reports, seems to be intensive GPU use
for video playback, more often than not via XBMC. This is the primary
use of MY box, and while not making use of XBMC on the machine, it has
resulted in a stable up time of 3+ days.

I am convinced this is kernel / driver module related specifically since
2.6 > 3.2, so those running Mint who think its resolved confuse me.
