After second reboot I could logon to my desktop session. This time I could halt the system selecting halt from the gear icon in the status bar. I started the VM again and also this time got a black screen. >From CTRL+ALT+F1 typed status lightdm and got stop/waiting. Typed in sudo start lightdm but go a black screen again, status lightdm gave me stop/waiting status.
