Public bug reported:

When I open many applications, then I got my task bar extended to the
right of my screen, so it gets a little useless, if many instance of the
same application are open they are not grouped together since it is
believde to have lot of space in the task bar to put their sign.

It also prevent one to use the applet to change desktop or any applet
placed at the right of the bottom task bar.

Gnome "knows" that the screeen ends at its actual end, since the mouse
does not go further right, and the task bars have the correct size when
few enough application are launched.
