Ok, fair enough. But can you give me a valid reason why ubuntu-desktop
should depend on nvidia-common? It doesn't make sense from a basic
sanity point of view, does it? In addtion, I have seen an issue where
people have tried:

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvida-*

To remove nvidia drivers, and they ended up removing ubuntu-desktop by
mistake. This puts the user into a potentially bad state. I would urge
you to please reconsider this as a bug.
