Exactly the same here.
I'm running a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 (32bit) on VMWare Player 5.0.1 
with Win 7 x64 Host.
About 70-80% of the boot-ups, the display-manager starts (I can see the mouse 
for a few seconds on a black screen) and then crashes (back to the boot-up 
sequence with a lonley [OK].
Switching to a console in this case and doing a "service lightdm start" (most 
of the time once only) brings up the GUI.
The other 20-30% Ubuntu just boots up without any problems.
