*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 297058 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297058
** Description changed: 1.) Ubuntu 12.10 2.) kernel (3.5.0.21.27) 3.) What did I expect to happen? SATA hard drive is recognized timely after grub selection and boot succeeds. 4.) What happened instead? System fails to recognize hard drive at boot after grub: blinking cursor. Boot procedure is discontinued after 1 min, fallback to (initramfs) console. CTRL+D continues boot process. Error is reproducable with 12.10 amd64 live version. ================================================================= References: - Duplicate of #843639, #279693, #297058, #595448 + Duplicate of #843639, #279693, #297058, #595448, #991040 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1665984 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1836518 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1822916 http://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=630342 http://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=718475 Following steps failed to solve issue: - HD health is fine: no badblocks found! - BIOS: APCI setting changed - BIOS: SMART functionality disabled - adding parameters "noapic nolapic apci=off" to /etc/defaults/grub - new SATA cable for HD - reinstallation of kernel (3.5.0.21.27) - update-initramfs -f - update-grub - check of UUIDs & fstab The issue seems to be related to: - kernel - preferably Samsung HDs - VIA RAID Chipsets - 64bit environments Probable cause: communication with SATA drive is not clean, consequently drive resets communication for >1 min, boot procedure fails to recognize HD properly and breaks. Workaround may be to increase waiting time of grub in /etc/defaults/grub.
