So it is the infamous PL3507. These are sold with bugs in various flavours. I don't know about a particular solution for an early failure like this "Error parsing configrom".
If you have access to a Windows PC, try update the PL3507's firmware. (Prolific's firmware uploader runs under Windows.) Not all PL3507 revisions can be updated. (Use "lsmod" to list loaded modules and their dependencies, "modprobe -r modulename" to unload modules.) Connect the device. Load the host adapter driver.
