So it is the infamous PL3507. These are sold with bugs in various
flavours. I don't know about a particular solution for an early failure
like this "Error parsing configrom".

If you have access to a Windows PC, try update the PL3507's firmware.
(Prolific's firmware uploader runs under Windows.) Not all PL3507
revisions can be updated. Some revisions need to be updated in two

Other things to try:
 - Unload all IEEE 1394 driver modules. (Use "lsmod" to list loaded modules and 
their dependencies, "modprobe -r modulename" to unload modules.) Connect the 
device. Load the host adapter driver. ("modprobe ohci1394".)
 - Install gscanbus or 1394commander and use them to reset the FireWire bus 
while the CD-RW is connected.
