strange, did you try the .deb? during the install of virtualbox you have to agree with license. this appears in the terminal. when you dont agree the install fails and often breaks apt and the synaptic. synaptic and -apt is still working? please try: sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq virtualbox and reinstall virtualbox using the .deb.
