Same here, but with Ubuntu Tribe 2 (not Edubuntu) and VMware Player 2.0.0. X dies while Gnome is loading, leaving the following message in my .xsession-errors:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: x-session-manager: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.
