Wait a sec. Sorry, I was confused. It's "/etc/init.d/networking restart" that is, or at least *was*, deprecated, as asserted by the script itself when it was part of the netbase package. But now (I'm running 12.10) that /etc/init.d/networking is in ifupdown and is a symbolic link to /lib/init/upstart-job it no longer claims deprecativity. And reading the ifupdown changelog I don't get the impression that "sudo restart networking" is deprecated. Hopefully a more knowledgeable person will comment.
