lol... The saga continued, but I managed to put another drive in, reinstall the older kernel complete, and with the old drive running as slave was able to boot the recovery mode from the new grub shell. Probably a clumsy way to do it, but got back up and running. (Wonder why it went down... wasn't a new install, so getting the "error 18" message was a little strange)
