  Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex for AMD+64
  Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic

  Hi!

  First of all:
  1. English is not my mother tongue but I studied it when I was a child so I
still remember a few words to express myself.
  2. Linux is not my mother OS and I never studied it or worked with it before
so I have no idea about settings and so.

  Ok, let's go for it.

I guess the error happened when upgrading from Hardy Heron to Intrepid
Ibex by writing on the bash "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" as seen on
  http://doc.ubuntu-es.org/Intrepid_Ibex/Actualizar

In a certain moment (I do not remember when exactly) I was asked to go
on with the procedure (Y) or abort (N) or ask for details (D), I asked
for Details and the system hung completely.

Well... is that on the front of my PC a pretty button? Let's press it
  and see what happens...

- WTF? I couldn't go further than Grub! I was entering several times in
- kernel recovering mode but the process froze once and once again.
- Suddenly the login screen appeared so I entered with my user and
- password.

- Holy shit! My desktop was completely black. When I started to move the mouse
desperately I discover two things:
+ Holy mother of pearl! My desktop was completely black. When I started to move
the mouse desperately I discover two things:
  1. There were still more than one work area on the Desktop, because by moving
the scroll wheel I could see the animation of the change of work areas. From
black screen to black screen. Big deal! :-(
  2. On the right-down corner a message appeared in a box. You can see an
screenshot (yes, it worked!) here:

After restarting with the bash for a couple of hundred times, I finally
could recover the kernel so I'm writing this note on Ubuntu. Everything
  seems to be right again.

  So I hope...
