I had this same problem. Try adding the following lines to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf in the nvidia device section:

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"

I had found when I tried to start compiz.real from the command-line it
gave me an error, "No GLXFBConfig for depth 32." I found a post to the
Ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=193002&page=2)
with this suggestion and it fixed the compiz.real crashing issue I was
experiencing.
