I got it working by installing qemu-kvm-spice, python-spice-client-gtk and spice-client-gtk. I actually rebuilt the VM, resulting in kvm-spice in the machine xml. I don't know if that was required, since it was the gtk clients that got it up and running. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server.
