At last, four years down the road, the kernels 3.8.0-6 and 3.8.0-7 have the reboot issue fixed. No more quirks to be applied. Just FYI, the fix described by sokai did help with Ubuntu 11.xx but would not help with Ubuntu 12.xx versions. Still, many thanks to sokai and others who had contributed.
