Experiencing this on Ubuntu & Xubuntu 12.04.2.

My workaround after reading posts here, there, and elsewhere:

sudo apt-get install cpulimit;

edit /etc/cron.weekly/apt-xapian-index
to utilize cpulimit

file attached

Keeps the process from taking over the cpu, works great.
