Having changed to the Xorg edgers ppa & upgrading to the 13.2 beta ATI driver this issue appears resolved so this would suggest that when Firefox starts it's doing something that causes interaction with the Graphics driver. I had a similar freeze when launching Steam from the launcher bar also. I was using the fglrx-updates package but have now switched to the fglrx package. When I had this issue in 12.04 I was using the fglrx-updates package also and that being the common denominator I would suggest it is not just a Unity issue but an issue with the fglrx-driver.
