I think a second monitor increases the probability of freezes. Maybe because of more GPU Memory usage. When I have connected a monitor to my laptop I have more often a freeze. And if I work only with the laptop display I have seemingly no freeze since using kernel version 3.8.2. I agree with cemc that its not the monitor but more about the memory usage of a system which is different when working with one or more monitors.
