I have also seen squid hanging for considerable periods for no apparent reason, but I have never been able to reproduce it reliably. I wonder if it's the same cause? My system is a VM running 12.04 using squid3 3.1.19-1ubuntu3.12.04.1.
Warren, it seems likely to me that this is a kernel networking issue, unless squid is doing something odd with the network stack. I don't think we're doing anything special to squid in Ubuntu. Would you be able to test an upstream kernel (without Ubuntu patches) but on an affected Ubuntu machine please?
