I have also seen squid hanging for considerable periods for no apparent
reason, but I have never been able to reproduce it reliably. I wonder if
it's the same cause? My system is a VM running 12.04 using squid3
3.1.19-1ubuntu3.12.04.1.

Warren, it seems likely to me that this is a kernel networking issue,
unless squid is doing something odd with the network stack. I don't
think we're doing anything special to squid in Ubuntu.

Would you be able to test an upstream kernel (without Ubuntu patches)
but on an affected Ubuntu machine please? Instructions are here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

Once done, please change the bug status back to New.
