I just had another update (which presumably changed the kernel patch
version as uname still says its 3.2.0-38 Kernel) but the same thing
happened again. Its extremely annoying. I have now figured out how to
switch the driver from the command prompt using 'update-alternatives'
which makes it slightly less painful.

NOTE: just spotted a typo in my last comment: the last paragraph in my
previous comment should have read:

"I then reboot with 3.2.0-38 which booted to graphical login as the
installed driver is nvidia-304. This works as expected."
