** Description changed:

  Not sure when this started but recently when I plug in my headphones the
  sound output becomes garbled but only for movie players (vlc / dragon).
  Sound is OK for amarok but switches to mono (pavucontrol appears to
  think it is stereo but the sound output is mono (yes the headphones are
  stereo!)).
  
- This definitely worked previously (kubuntu 12.04) and i think, but
