Thanks Brian you are a genius! That seems to have fixed it. I have two (almost) duplicate installations of 12.10 here and they were both suffering the same problem. I found the same syntax error in both machines' GRUB files and after correcting them they both updated without error and are now stable.
I have a question though - I notice that line 11 also uses this syntax - is that also an error and should I fix it too? 10 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset 11 video=uvesafb:mode_option=>>1280x800-24<<,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap" 12 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" I think the 'culprit' was a third party customisation utility called super-boot-manager.
