I used synaptic to install gnome I think, because I didn't know the
actual name of it (I kept trying gdm, gnome-desktop, etc), but I used
the commandline to uninstall. apt-get uninstall gnome.

I looked through synaptic and searched "login" and did ubuntu-bug login
for the unable to log in error. I'll file a report in "gnome" too. It's
sure to belong somewhere.
