After trying out various options I sent the machine to our maintenance
people.

It seems there was a hardware issue with the sound card. They have
rectified it and the sound is working fine.

Sorry for all the trouble. As far as I am concerned, we could treat the
bug as RESOLVED and close this bug.

  Till about a month ago there was no sound problem on my HP Probook
  running Ubuntu 12.03. I think a recent upgrade has broken the sound
  system. Now there is no sound at all. I have tried searching for
  solutions but fixes have failed. I downloaded the latest alsa driver
  from the alsa project site and compiled it. But this too has not worked.
