Here is a trick that makes that suspicion even more probable:

1. Disconnect the drive. 
2. Log out of your account, or lock the screen.
3. Connect the drive.
4. Log-in.

On my machine, in this case, Deja-Dup wins the race and mounts the
Drive. Now Gnome complains that it cannot mount the drive becauase "it
is already in use".

Seems like a "Race-condition" mostly.
