Public bug reported: Running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, as installed on a Dell XPS 13 "Sputnik 2" developer laptop.
32-bit programs such as Aurora or nightly builds of Firefox cannot look up ".local" mDNS addresses by default; I'd already installed the 'ia32-libs' package to get 32-bit programs working. By trial and error I found there was a "lib32nss-mdns" package which includes the necessary support, but was not installed by the ia32-libs package. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ia32-libs/+bug/218097 sounds similar but claims to have been fixed in 2008, so doesn't seem to match up with what I see on 12.04 and 13.04.
