Confirmed that the patch listed above does not solve the full extent of
the problem.

It does allow the module to build, but then any use of the network will cause 
the kernel to OOPS.
Only a hard-power-cycle  will restore access to the system, provided you boot 
into single-user mode to remove the module prior to system usage.
