I understand this to mean you want me to reinstall Ubuntu on my wifes
computer?
I do not think she would appreciate that, and losing her entire environment.
She is NOT repeat NOT versed in Linux.

We are running the LTS version of Ubuntu since we thought LTS meant
"Long Time Support"
i.e. something stable that does not move around too much.

The computer in question is a commodity item Compaq Pressario CQ58,
sold in very large quantities.
I will investigate if I could find a second hard disk, to do a test install.

The kernel in question is 3.2.0-40-generic-pae as reported by uname -r
