I have a macbook pro with a thunderbolt connector to a second monitor
with usb devices. If I boot the machine with the thunderbolt connect my
display and other devices are detected. However it the thunderbolt
connection is done after boot, the display and devices are not
detected. Furthermore, if I connected the thunderbolt bus so it was
detected at boot and then unblug it after booting, the second display
is not recognized has having disappeared.

The kernel is 3.8.0-19-generic

There is another bug about thunderbolt plug-and-play problems, but is
discusses the Sony Viao specifically along with Sony patches.
