Please do a full system update, this should pull in the avahi-daemon package and make the avahi-daemon running. With this CUPS will also work.
To do the update use either update-manager or run the commands: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade If this does not work, run sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon Please tell here whether you had to do so.
