Took a while for the issue to reappear.  The length of time that it
occurs is random.  I've been able to watch an entire movie without
issue.  Other times it won't last a song.  Once it occurs, I have to
open the sound control, switch to stereo and back to 5.1.  The issue is
program agnostic (vmware, chrome, rythmbox, system sounds).  Killing
pulseaudio (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log) fixed the corrupted
audio as well.
