Public bug reported: I can not do commit -a It fails with the message fatal: unable to auto-detect email address (got 'tim@whitlam.(none)')
the error message helpfully suggests *** Please tell me who you are. Run git config --global user.email "y...@example.com" git config --global user.name "Your Name" to set your account's default identity. I have done these steps for my user name, but the error persists. This happens with a new git (git init) and with cloned repositories.
