I can confirm that on my system, Raring 64, "unity --replace" DOES NOT cause the HUD to start working, not in Writer nor anywhere else i LibreOffice.
This bug is not only unassigned, but also of undecided importance, for over a year now. And I am also watching another bug, related to Network Manager: though marked as of high importance, it is still being ignored ever since January.
