Well,

all I can say is that I have had no reason to install extlinux, but that
doesn't really matter.

Funnily enough, update-grub does no longer seem to have a hard time running 
os-prober, now that I have commented out GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true again:
real    0m17.431s
user    0m2.080s
sys     0m2.580s
Not that I have applied any updates since - mysterious...

grub.cfg and syslog attached for reference, you can clearly see the
duplicate entries for the raw md0 disks sda1 and sdb1...
